Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make in your entire planning process — and yet for many couples, it’s also one of the most overwhelming. With hundreds of beautifully curated Instagram feeds to scroll through, how do you actually know who’s right for you?
The truth is, the best photographer for your wedding isn’t necessarily the one with the most followers or the flashiest portfolio. It’s the one whose style matches your vision, who feels right to be around on your wedding day, and who you genuinely trust to capture it well. Here’s how to find them.
1. Start With Style
Before you look at a single photographer, it helps to know what you’re actually looking for. Style is the foundation everything else is built on — your venue, your florals, your colour palette, and the photographer you ultimately choose should all speak the same visual language.
A great place to start is Pinterest, or if you haven’t already, our blog on wedding photography styles is a great place to help choose the right style for you.
Here’s the thing — your photography style and your wedding styling decisions actually tie in with each other very closely:
If you’re drawn to spring or summer tones — pastels, butter yellow, blush, sky blue — and picturing an outdoor venue full of natural light and open space, you’ll want a photographer known for a bright and airy look. Their portfolio should already reflect that lifted, colourful, light-filled aesthetic.
If you love the idea of a fashion-magazine, editorial feel — clean composition, confident posing, beautifully directed shots — look for a photographer who’s clearly comfortable directing couples (rather than just observing them), and whose editing style leans toward neutral tones or a film-like quality.
If you’re picturing something romantic and moody — think candlelight, deep colour palettes, dramatic shadow — you’ll want a photographer whose editing style is noticeably darker and more desaturated, since this is a skill (and a deliberate choice) not every photographer has built into their style.

Some photographers can alter their style to cater to the vision or look you have in mind. We would like to say this is one of our strengths. But some photographers have a niche and have a blanket editing style, so for example- if you’re having a wedding with lots of colour, I would avoid a photographer that explicitly edits in a tonal style (black and white / browns and muted greens).
2. Ask Previous Couples
A polished website and a beautiful Instagram grid only tell you one side of the story. It’s entirely possible — and more common than you’d think — for someone to present a wonderfully professional, trustworthy persona online while being a completely different experience to actually work with in person.
This is why talking to past couples matters so much. Most photographers will happily connect you with previous clients, or you may find honest reviews on Google.
When you do reach out, here’s what’s worth asking:
Was the photographer easy and enjoyable to work with throughout the day? How did they blend into the wedding — did they feel intrusive, or did they capture things naturally without disrupting the flow? Were they punctual and well-prepared? Did they deliver the final gallery within the promised timeframe? And importantly, what was communication like — both in the lead-up to the wedding and afterwards?
A photographer can take stunning photos and still create a stressful experience if they’re disorganised, hard to reach, or chronically late delivering galleries. You deserve both beautiful photos and a smooth, professional experience getting them.

3. Check Full Galleries, Not Just Highlights
Every photographer’s website and Instagram is a curated best-of. It’s natural — and smart marketing — to showcase your strongest images. But it also means you’re only ever seeing a photographer under their best conditions: perfect light, a stunning venue, an effortlessly photogenic couple. I would be lying to say we don’t post our best images to Instagram too- after all our Instagram is like a cover letter for photographers.
Weddings, in reality, happen across wildly different lighting and venue conditions — dim reception rooms, bright midday ceremonies, last-minute rain, awkward indoor lighting at a registry office. A truly skilled wedding photographer needs to be adaptable across all of it, not just brilliant in ideal conditions.
This is why asking to see one or two full galleries from real weddings (rather than just highlight reels) is so valuable. It shows you exactly how consistent they are — how they handle a dark dance floor, an outdoor ceremony in harsh sun, a rainy day, a venue with mixed lighting. If every image across a full gallery still feels considered and high-quality, that’s a great sign you’re looking at a true professional.

4. Do You Actually Get Along With Them?
It’s easy to get swept up entirely in the photos themselves — but here’s something worth sitting with: your photographer isn’t just capturing your wedding day, they’re spending it with you. In many cases, they’ll be one of the people you interact with most throughout the entire day, often more than some of your own guests.
If you don’t genuinely click with them — if they feel cold, overly directive in a way that stresses you out, or even just a little egotistical — it can quietly affect your experience of the whole day, even if the final photos turn out beautifully.
A great way to test this is through your initial enquiry and any consultation call. Do they listen well? Do they seem genuinely interested in your day, or are they just running through a sales script? Do you feel comfortable and at ease talking to them? Trust that instinct — it’s often a very accurate preview of what the wedding day itself will feel like.

5. Clarify What’s Actually Included
Photography packages can vary enormously between providers, so it’s worth getting clarity early rather than assuming. How many hours of coverage are included, and what happens if your day runs over? Are engagement photos part of the package, or a separate add-on? Will there be a second photographer, and if so, is that included or an extra cost? How many final images can you expect, and how long will it take to receive them?
None of these questions are awkward to ask — a professional photographer will expect them and answer clearly. If you find yourself getting vague or evasive responses, take that as useful information too.
Trust the Whole Picture
At the end of the day, choosing your wedding photographer comes down to more than just admiring their portfolio. It’s about finding someone whose style matches your vision, whose professionalism you can rely on, and whose presence on the day will feel like a comfort rather than a stress.
Get all of that right, and you won’t just end up with beautiful photos — you’ll have genuinely enjoyed the process of creating them.

At Wisteria Weddings, we believe getting to know your photographer should feel as easy and natural as the photos themselves. If you’d love to chat about your day and see if we’re the right fit, we’d love to hear from you.
