“Why does a single day of photos cost thousands?”

It’s a question nearly every couple asks when they see a $2,500+ quote for wedding photography. While experienced Melbourne wedding photographers charge up to $10,000- that fee covers far more than just showing up with a camera. If that were the case, then for that money you could just buy a nice camera and give it to a friend to take photos.

In the sections ahead, you’ll get a clear breakdown of what you’re really paying for — and more importantly, why it’s an investment worth valuing.

1. Your $2500 isn’t for 1 day—it’s closer to 40 hours of work

When booking a wedding photographer, breaking down the cost by the hours the photographer was there on the day would make anyone want to quit their day job and become one. I mean, when you break it down like that: $2500 divided by 8 is just over $300 an hour. Not a bad hourly rate. But what you don’t see are the hours spent behind the scene.

On top of the 8 hours, you need to factor in the following:

Once you break down the actual time spent on your wedding, it’s closer to 40 hours for a typical 8 hour wedding. Divide $2500 by 8 and the rate is just shy of $63 an hour which is much more reasonable.

The gear alone can cost as much as a small car!

Professional photography equipment is expensive. From bodies to lenses and drones, the totally cost of a professional photographer’s gear can be up to $30,000. Plus there is insurance on top of that. Let’s break down the cost of the gear:

Camera Body(2)- $11,000 or $5500 each

Most photographer’s require professional level cameras for best quality images. (Canon R5, Sony A7r or equivalent). Wedding photographers always require two cameras so this is already almost $12,000 alone. Some photographer’s even carry a third body as backup in case something happens to their two main bodies.

While some wedding photographers may opt for cheaper bodies, I personally believe the latest camera technology is essential for weddings due to the facial recognition, low light performance, dynamic range (I know this stuff sounds like jargon, but trust me- makes a huge difference in the final quality of your photos).

Lenses (2) ($7000)

Professional grade lenses are required for high quality photography. Most wedding photographers carry a 24-70mm f/2.8 and a 70-200mm f/2.8, both of which are essential to cover any possible scenario. You can get by with cheaper lenses, but for bokeh effects (blurry background, sun flare or to isolate subject from background), I really think I good lens is essential.

Drone ($2500)

Many photographers offer drone photography. While there are many affordable drones on the market, to ensure full dynamic range and that the camera will perform well in low light and shooting into the sun (given that most drone photos are taken at sunset), a high end drone is required such as a Mavic 3 or Mavic 4. These cost anywhere between $2000-$4000, especially if you purchase an accessory pack which is essential for professional drone operation.

Accessories ($2000)

Accessories for photography include flash equipment (flash, stand, softboxes, flash accessories) which can cost around $1000 for an entry level set. Then you also have to purchase spare batteries (at least 4 @ $70 each), a camera harness ($250) and camera bags ($500).

As you can see, the equipment can easily add up to $20,000 or more, and this doesn’t include recurring expenses such as insurance, subscriptions (photoshop, video editing), website/ gallery hosting, and travel expenses.

You’re paying for years of experience, not just a click

Some couples oft for a DIY approach to weddings photography by allowing guests to take their own photos on their smart phone and uploading them to a shared folder, or perhaps asking a photography enthusiast friend to take some shots on the day instead of hiring a professional.

Wedding photographers have captured hundreds of weddings. They can anticipate emotional moments- the groom’s tears, intimate glances in the audience, intimate moments between the couple—and be in the right place before the moment unfolds. That kind of instinct doesn’t come from a beginner trial run; it’s built through countless real weddings.

Professional photographers also understand the challenges of different lighting conditons- whether it’s shooting in low-lit churches, under harsh midday sun, or navigating tight reception venues, experienced pros know how to adapt instantly. They’ve perfected technical skills like adjusting settings on the fly, using off-camera flash or reflectors, and selecting the right lens for the mood. That expertise keeps your photos looking polished no matter how unpredictable the conditions.

Beyond technical mastery, experienced photographers excel at composition, posing, and candid direction. They understand how to make couples and guests feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera. Their eye for framing and editing elevates every shot from ordinary to emotional storytelling.

There are no second chances

When you book a wedding photographer, you’re investing in someone with the confidence and skill to capture your day perfectly the first time—because there isn’t a second chance. Once vows are exchanged and moments pass, they’re gone forever. That pressure requires years of experience, meticulous preparation, and the ability to anticipate emotional highlights before they unfold. Couples pay a premium because they want a seasoned professional who understands how to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right moment, not someone whose “shots” depend on luck or happenstance.

Your wedding photos will become heirlooms—tokens of emotion and memory that outlast flowers, favors, and even the venue itself. Those blurred or poorly lit smartphone shots won’t hold up as you revisit them 10, 20, or even 50 years from now. Professionals capture images designed to stand the test of time, preserving your story with artistry and intention. That investment guarantees that your day is immortalised—not just documented—and that the emotional authenticity of those fleeting moments lives on beautifully
